On the last Sunday in October five intrepid volunteers braved a cold, wet and windy start to plant about 330 grasses and tussocks into very wet soil to extend the existing creekside plantation near Union Road.

This Sunday 27 November we’ll return to the Union Road end of the Park for our final Sunday of the year, a general weed, prune and tidy up. Wear suitable clothes including sturdy water resistant footwear, gardening gloves and sunhat, bring a raincoat in case of forecast rain, and stay afterwards for free drinks, bickies and a chat.

As usual Tuesday Toilers have been busy removing uteloads of weeds and rubbish plus planting more grasses, tussocks and groundcovers at various sites: about 130 seedlings below Union Road, a similar number on the Riversdale Road bank, and 80 below the Scout Hall.

Join us around 10 am any Tuesday near the pond below Union Road before we move to that day’s worksite. Afterwards we generally lunch at Café Biscotti, backing onto the Park at 929 Riversdale Road, so even if you can’t join us in the morning, you’re welcome for a gossip over some food or drink around midday.

Our last Tuesday of 2011 will be 20 December which means only four opportunities left to join the Tuesday toilers. We’ll probably have a special lunch on either 13 or 20 December - contact any Tuesday toiler to confirm details.

We’ll probably start work again on Tuesday 7 February and Sunday 29 April, and our 2012 Annual General Meeting will be held at Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre at 7.30 pm on Tuesday 24 April. Stay tuned for a new look newsletter to herald the new year.

On the last Sunday in September seventeen keen volunteers, including several family groups, enjoyed a warm and dry spring morning to plant about 400 seedlings into surprisingly dry soil near the creek below the Scout Hall.

Special thanks to City of Boroondara employees who gave up their Sunday mornings for our Park. Peter delivered a ute load of plants and coordinated the morning’s work while Pepe prepared one of his legendary barbecues (even though he did forget the vegieburgers).

This Sunday 30 October we’ll work below Union Road to extend the existing creekside plantation. Wear suitable clothes including sturdy footwear, gardening gloves and sunhat, bring a raincoat in case of forecast rain, and stay afterwards for free drinks, bickies and a chat.

On the last Sunday in July, nearly 100 volunteers from the local community plus various schools, Scouts, etc congregated in Glen Iris to plant about 1800 seedlings along Gardiners Creek before enjoying a delicious barbecue courtesy of City of Boroondara and Friends of Gardiners Creek.

This Sunday 28 August we’ll be back in our own Park, helping City of Boroondara to plant the Bonner Street nature strip, behind the Riversdale Road Scout Hall, from 10 am. Wear suitable clothes including sturdy footwear, gardening gloves and sunhat, and stay afterwards for free drinks, bickies and a chat.

Tuesday Toilers have been particularly busy this month, planting more trees and shrubs along the Riversdale Road bank plus removing uteloads of weeds and rubble from a future plantation site below the end of Anderson Street. Further north, the Regent Honeyeater Project are restoring Box-Ironbark landscapes near Benalla, reducing salinity and erosion and providing habitat for endangered wildlife. Their 2011 planting weekends are scheduled for 3-4 and 17-18 September. They offer free accommodation, a free feast followed by bush dancing on Saturday evening, and a free barbecue lunch followed by wildflower and ecology walks on Sunday afternoon.

This spring promises perfect planting conditions after a mild moist winter, so why not join other enthusiastic people helping to secure a future for threatened species such as the Regent Honeyeater, Grey-crowned Babbler, Squirrel Glider and Brush-tailed Phascogale. On the last Sunday in June, seven keen volunteers enjoyed a mild winter morning to plant about 350 more seedlings in the mulch upstream of the little bridge plus around the corner near the end of Lille Street.

This Sunday 31 July we’ve been invited by the City of Boroondara to their official National Tree Day planting in Nettleton Reserve, Glen Iris, between Gardiners Parade/Dawson Drive and Gardiners Creek, Melway 59 K 7. Be there in time to start planting at 10 am, and stay for a free barbecue lunch around midday.

On the last Sunday in May, eleven keen volunteers, including a couple of youngsters, weeded around established plants then planted about 150 more seedlings along the edge of the big plantation below Delta Street.

This Sunday 26 June will be similar work but at a different site, weeding and planting the floodplain above the little bridge. Please join us from 10 am, wearing suitable clothes including sturdy footwear, workgloves and sunhat, and bring a raincoat in case of forecast rain. Stay afterwards for free drinks and bickies.

Tuesday Toilers have also been very busy pruning, removing vast quantities of weeds, spreading ute loads of mulch, collecting litter, and even planting a couple of hundred seedlings. A couple of Tuesdays ago we were joined by fifteen Strathcona year 9 horticulture students, who planted about 200 seedlings in the mulched floodplain where we plan to work this Sunday.

A few weeks ago, long time FSSP member Frank Sharp died at the ripe old age of ninety years. He was born in 1920 in Brisbane, commanded World War Two RAAF radar stations at Cooktown, Dunk Island and Milne Bay (New Guinea), then worked across northern Australia designing, building and maintaining ABC radio and TV transmitters.

From about 1980 till about five years ago he and wife Nola lived in Varzin Avenue, surrounded by an award winning native garden. Over about a decade of active involvement with FSSP, Frank was a great inspiration, source of essential information about local botany and ecology, and a keen Wednesday and Sunday worker.

Near Union Road a clump of Dianella tasmannica and a copse of Banksias were both planted by Frank using material propagated from his home garden. About sixty people attended a service in Camberwell to celebrate Frank’s long and varied life. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

If you want more planting than is available in our local Park, try the ninth annual Grow West Community Planting Day on Sunday 17th July at the Yaloak Estate, Rowsley. Join a volunteer force to plant 7,000 seedlings and see extensive revegetation works in the Rowsley Valley, part of the grand vision of Grow West, establishing biolinks from the Brisbane Ranges National Park across to Werribee Gorge State Park and Lerderderg State Park. The annual event is run in partnership with Grow West, Victorian National Parks Association, Friends of Werribee Gorge and Long Forest Mallee and Parks Victoria.

On the last Sunday in November last year, ten keen volunteers threw off their post election hangovers to brave a mild morning between forecast occasional showers. Congratulations to keen Sunday toiler Rob Clark re-elected with an increased margin.

We mulched a new area to plant next year then collected several bags of weeds and litter from along the creek. That’s it for Sundays in 2010, but we’ll return on Sunday 1 May 2011, then the last Sunday monthly till November 2011.

A week later four of us enjoyed the annual City of Boroondara Parks & Gardens joint Advisory Committee & Friends Group's Christmas function. Long service awards went to Pam, Doug and the recently departed Frank Horwill.

Tuesday Toilers have also been busy over summer, removing vast quantities of weeds, spreading ute loads of mulch, collecting litter, pruning, and even planting about eighty seedlings. We’d hoped for a well deserved break, but the summer was so mild we were able to work right through.

Our 2011 AGM will be held on Tuesday 10 May (note one week earlier than previously advertised), at 7:30 pm, in the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre Cottage. FRIENDS OF SOUTH SURREY PARK NEWS – SEPTEMBER 2010

On Sunday 29 August fourteen volunteers, including local Box Hill MLA Rob Clark, enjoyed a pleasantly warm morning to plant about 600 seedlings. Even at the end of the wettest winter for years, the clay bank behind the Riversdale Road shops carpark was surprisingly dry, but got a good soaking with 11 mm rain a few days later.

This Sunday 26 September, we’ll plant more seedlings in a more hospitable site, near the creek below Union Road. Join us from 10 am, wearing suitable clothes including sturdy footwear, workgloves and sunhat. Bring a raincoat in case of forecast rain, then stay afterwards for free drinks and bickies.

Tuesday Toilers are keeping busy planting, pruning, removing weeds and litter, and spreading yet more mulch, though on Tuesday 7 September most of us took a day off to join the fascinating Native Food Plant Tour of Wurundjeri Gardens, Hawthorn. However we still managed to plant about 400 more seedlings at the Sunday site and various other locations between Riversdale Road and Anderson Street.

Join us around 10 am any Tuesday near the pond below Union Road before we move to that day’s worksite. If you don’t find us initially, wander down the creek and we’ll catch up eventually. Wear sturdy footwear and a sunhat, and bring a raincoat, drink bottle, workgloves, litter bags and enthusiasm. Afterwards we generally lunch at Café Biscotti, backing onto the Park at 929 Riversdale Road, so even if you can’t join us in the morning, you’re welcome for a gossip over some food or drink around midday.

We generally work on the last Sunday monthly, and have only two scheduled activities left this year. October has five Sundays, so to avoid the Melbourne Cup Long Weekend we will probably reschedule the Spring Wildflower Walk to 24 October, then 28 November will weed and mulch a new area to plant 2011

Welcome to the post election edition of FSSP news, written as we still don’t know whether South Surrey Park will be moving forward, sideways, or backwards, or standing up for real action against great big new taxes, wasteful debts, and flotillas of boats full of illegals heading up Back Creek towards Surrey Hills.

On Sunday 25 July eleven volunteers, including two children, enjoyed another cool start for a very productive morning. We planted about 850 seedlings, generously donated by the City of Boroondara, to extend the National Tree Day plantation below the Scout Hall. Local state politician and regular volunteer Rob Clark brought along Josh Frydenberg, Liberal candidate for the federal seat of Kooyong, who also worked very hard. Congratulations to Josh for a convincing victory on Saturday, and we look forward to working with him as our local member.

With sadness we report the departure of very long term member Frank Horwill, who’s been an active mid week volunteer since last millennium, and served on the committee since 2004, including four years as treasurer. He’s off to greener pastures on the north coast of NSW and we wish him best of luck.

The City of Boroondara is celebrating the International Year of Biodiversity with grants of equipment to Friends groups, and we’ve received a new wheel barrow and a selection of hand tools. We’ve also spent some of our Canterbury and Surrey Hills Community Bank (Bendigo Bank) sponsorship on more planters, mulch forks and weeding tools.

One of Josh Frydenberg’s election promises is the formation of a Green Army to enact local environmental initiatives. See attached press release. We await details of how the workers will be selected, trained and supervised and how they will contribute to ongoing long term environmental projects.

Further north, the Regent Honeyeater Project are restoring Box-Ironbark landscapes near Benalla, reducing salinity and erosion and providing habitat for endangered wildlife. The 2010 season is shaping up to be one of the most productive for several years, with over twenty significant habitat sites being planned. They offer free accommodation, a free feast followed by bush dancing on Saturday evening, and a free barbecue lunch on Sunday.

Their 2010 planting weekends are scheduled for 4-5 and 18-19 September. Please bring friends to join other enthusiastic people and experience the fun and sense of community working together to secure a future for threatened species such as the Regent Honeyeater, Grey-crowned Babbler, Squirrel Glider and Brush-tailed Phascogale. Last week we began the twelfth year of formal FSSP activities with our Annual General Meeting at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre Cottage. The existing committee was re-elected unopposed, then we were entertained and informed by guest speaker Geoff Lay with his brilliant photographs of fascinating fungi. Thanks Geoff for helping us to appreciate the beauty of these amazing organisms, and their importance in our environment, and inspiring us to learn more about them.

Monthly working bees will commence at 10 am this Sunday 29 April, with some weeding, planting and tidying along the creek below Union Road, then continue on our usual last Sunday of the month. Please join us from 10 am for a couple of hours of easy work. Bring family, friends and other willing workers. Wear sturdy footwear and sunhat. Bring a raincoat, workgloves and enthusiasm. Stay afterwards for free drinks and bickies.

Recently the historic big footbridge, first built in 1936, was substantially reconstructed, and should give many more years of safe service. Plans are still being discussed to replace the small footbridge with a more flood resistant design, about fifteen metres further upstream, connecting with a new path from the platform table. Possum boxes installed

5 possum boxes have just been installed in native eucalypts in the park. Two are near the notice board, one is across the bridge towards the children's playground, one is near Union Road, and one is in the large eucalypt near Essex Road. 4 of the boxes are for Brushtailed possums and one is for Ring Tailed possums.

On the last Sunday in October, twenty three volunteers, including local MLA Rob Clark, City Councillor Dick Menting, and staff from the City Council and Melbourne Water, enjoyed a warm breezy morning to plant about 2400 seedlings on the east bank of the creek near Riversdale Road. We planted a lot of extra grasses, daisies, shrubs and trees to thicken up last August’s plantation, as well as extending it further down to the creek and northwards along the top of the bank, before enjoying Peppy’s famous barbecue.

Over the following Wednesdays we planted a couple of hundred more grasses, daisies and shrubs in the same area, as well as a few more below Delta and Anderson Streets, and of course the usual weeding and litter collecting.

This Sunday 27 November we’ll return to the much worked site below Delta Street, to mulch another small area to plant next year. Meet there at 10 am, wearing sensible work clothes including sunhat, sturdy footwear and gloves, but bring a raincoat in case of forecast rain. If possible please bring old newspapers to spread under the woodchips supplied by the city council, and wheel barrows, pitchforks and shovels to spread the chips. Stay afterwards for free drinks, bickies and a chat.

Next Wednesday 30 November we’ll work behind the Riversdale Road shops, 7 December near Union Road, then 14 December back to Delta Street, and that will be it for another year! Please join us from 10 am for a couple of hours of weeding, pruning, and tidying up. Wear sturdy footwear and sunhat, bring a raincoat, drink bottle, workgloves, basic hand tools and enthusiasm.

Melbourne Water contractors recently began poisoning weeds along the creek between the two footbridges, and over summer will construct rock works to stabilise the creek banks, ready for planting next year with appropriate indigenous species. In another twelve months that section of waterway will be fully mulched and planted, something like the Riversdale Road section is now, and in about five years it will look like the Union Road section. On the last Sunday in September, seven volunteers, including two Scouts, enjoyed a warm breezy morning to plant about 50 daisies in the existing Delta Street plantation, plus spread more mulch to extend the area to be planted next year. Over the following few Wednesdays we did a lot more planting below the Union Road embankment, along the creek and below Delta Street, as well as the usual weeding and litter collecting.

This Sunday 30 October we’ll return to the creek near Riversdale Road, near the area recently planted by Melbourne Water contractors, for a City Council community planting followed by a free barbecue. Meet there at 10 am, wearing sensible work clothes including sunhat, sturdy footwear and gloves, but bring a raincoat in case of forecast rain. Stay afterwards for your free lunch and a chat.

Next Wednesday 2 November we’ll return to Sunday’s creekside plantation, 9 November to Delta Street then 16 November to near Union Road. Until further notice assume we’ll work every Wednesday morning, but at various locations round the Park. Please join us from 10 am for a couple of hours of weeding, pruning, and tidying up. Wear sturdy footwear and sunhat, bring a raincoat, drink bottle, workgloves, basic hand tools and enthusiasm.

The end of the year is now only two months away, and next month will be our last big Sunday. On 27 November we’ll start mulching another area to plant next year.
