Working bee - weeding along Back Creek and in the plantings

Image
Sunday November 24 2013. Eight people, including to two Year 8 Community Service students from Carey, weeded in the plantings and along Back Creek.  Sticky weed was the most common, we removed a lot of it. Unfortunately the baby Tawny Frogmouth had recently fallen from its nest in a nearby Eucalypt and died , so we buried it. The creek was flowing and a couple of ducks were swimming in it. We concluded with morning tea at Stuarts.

Working bee near Verdun Street

The working bee on 25 August 2013 was productive.  We replanted a section of South Surrey Park just down from the entry off Verdun Street behind the Riversdale Road shops, near Cafe Biscotti. Some friendly residents provided us with some nice coffee and stopped for a chat too.

We had a very successful and well attended working bee spreading mulch near the Scout Hall and across the creek on the embankments near the East Australian Engineering Co building.

We learnt all about bats at our AGM this year

Our Annual General Meeting for this year was held at 7:30pm Tuesday, 30th April, 2013 at The Cottage, Bedford Street,Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. Annual reports were presented then the following committee members elected: Pam Welsford, Maggie White, Stuart Paxton, Ursula Povey and Peter Campbell. Charles Povey was appointed auditor for the coming year. Our guest speaker, Dr Lindy Lumsden from the Arthur Rylah Institute, provided a fascinating presentation on bats.  Everyone was surprised to hear how many bats there are around, the amount of pest insects they consume, and how they require cracks for nesting. Dr Lumsden had a lovely small bat to show us too. Supper was then served.
